book review: "i hope they serve beer in hell" by tucker max

"I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell"
By Tucker Max

If you like books with various true stories about assholes doing retarded things while under the influence of alcohol in many different parts of the country, then this book is most definitely for you.

Tucker Max, the author of I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell, is absolutely the biggest asshole on the face of the planet (and I think he would be proud to hear it). Every story in the book has to do with him or his friends being drunk, womanizing, selfish bastards who have no moral fiber (if such a thing even exists..I begin to doubt that after reading this) and choose to do whatever they want for the sake of their own pleasure and enjoyment.

Also, while reading this book, you may be shocked to know that Tucker Max is attended the University of Chicago (in case you don't know, it's a great school but is filled with tons of nerds who hate to party supposedly), where he graduated in only three years, and then went to Duke University School of Law for three years. Really? The biggest asshole on the planet also turns out to be extremely smart.

I laughed, I cried, I became nauseous, but mostly I laughed. Actually, I don't think I've ever laughed as much at a book before as I did while reading this.

My favorite person in the book was SlingBlade. Tucker Max never uses his friends' real names but refers to them by their nicknames (ie: SlingBlade, Credit, Hate, etc.). SlingBlade is a nerdy Batman fan who fell in love with a girl who turned on him and broke his heart by being unfaithful to him. He's probably the most wholesome person in the entire book and despises Tucker's choice in whorish women. The funny thing about SlingBlade is when he gets a few drinks into him, he's quite possibly the most sarcastic person on the planet...and girls eat it up. The only problem is he refuses to get with these women because he's so distraught over his failed relationship with his one love.

I never thought I could laugh at someone so heartless and degrading, but then I read this book. I felt horrible doing it, but I cried with laughter the entire time. The only story I thought was horrific and I did not laugh once was the final story in the book. It's labeled "The Worst Tucker Story Ever" and for good reason. I can't even express the disgusting things that happen in that section of the book. I think this book would probably be perfect if it were not for that story. I had reached my limit.

Do I think Tucker Max is an asshole? Absolutely. Do I condone a lot of the things he did? Definitely not. Do I think this book is insanely hilarious? You better believe it.

Here are three of the stories, as a preview, in the book for your enjoyment...just click to read:
1. Tucker Ruptures Appendix, Hilarity Ensues
2. The Absinthe Donuts Story
3. Tucker Goes to a Hockey Game, Causes Trouble

My rating: 9/10
Positives: I laughed almost the entire time, I like the fact that he openly expresses the self-awareness that he is an asshole throughout the book, he has his own style of writing that works for his stories
Negatives: Poorly edited, very raunchy, very graphic at times, the last story really made me shake my head
